Great article about work/life balance for doctors from Harvard:
Work-life balance for physicians: The what, the why, and the how
There’s no need to work late nights and weekends any longer. There are other great options.
We are trained to give our all to medicine. I still recall doing surgery rotations where I was on call every other night, and on the “off” nights I didn’t get home until after 10:00 PM. The training and environment probably made us better physicians, but I suspect it made us more narrow individuals as well.
Younger doctors understand the importance of family and outside interests. They are much more interested in forming that proper balance between work time and personal time. We should probably take a lesson from those younger colleagues.
